Afghanistan’s versatile player, Mohamamad Nabi, showcased the pinnacle of his batting prowess in the inaugural One Day International (ODI) of the series against Sri Lanka on Friday.
Nabi orchestrated an imposing collaboration with fellow all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, their double-century partnership propelling Afghanistan to a concluding score of 339/6.

Nabi’s individual contribution amounted to a splendid 136 runs off 130 deliveries, featuring an elegant array of 15 fours and three sixes.

Omarzai claimed the title of the highest run-scorer for Afghanistan, achieving an unbeaten 149 off 115 deliveries, embellished with 13 fours and six sixes.

At 39 years and 39 days, Nabi secured his place as the sixth-oldest centurion in ODI history, surpassing the esteemed Sachin Tendulkar on the list. Tendulkar had achieved this feat at the age of 38 years and 327 days, marking his 100th and final century during an ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur back in March 2012.

Nabi and Omarzai orchestrated an enormous partnership of 242 runs, setting a new record for the highest sixth-wicket stand by an Afghan pair in ODIs, surpassing the previous record of 164 set by Asghar Afghan and Samiullah Shinwari.

Before Afghanistan’s resurgence, the spotlight belonged to Sri Lankan Pathum Nissanka, who etched his name in history by becoming the first male player from his country to achieve an ODI double-century. Nissanka’s explosive innings, opening the batting, resulted in an impressive 210 not out off just 139 deliveries. His innings comprised 20 fours and eight sixes, contributing to Sri Lanka’s formidable total of 381/3 in 50 overs.

Nissanka also broke the record for the most runs scored in boundaries by a Sri Lankan in an ODI innings, accumulating 128 runs through fours and sixes alone, surpassing the previous mark of 110 set by the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya, who was in attendance at the venue.
