Emiliano Martinez, the World Cup-winning goalkeeper for Argentina, lands in Kolkata

Emiliano Martinez, the winning goalie for Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, had a warm welcome on Monday as he landed at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Fans cheered for the football player who was one of the heroes of Argentina’s World Cup win in Qatar last December with tangible delight as he arrived at the airport.

From July 3 to July 6, he will be in the city for a variety of occasions, such as meet-and-greets, a conversation with kids at Santosh Mitra Square, and the unveiling of gates at the Mohun Bagan Club with the names of Pele, Diego Maradona, and Garfield Sobers.
“I feel fantastic and am quite thrilled. (Visiting India) was a dream. I’m glad to be in India after making a commitment to do so. At the airport, Martinez told reporters that India is a stunning nation.

On Tuesday, Martinez will open the Pele-Maradona-Sobers gate at Mohun Bagan. Diego Maradona previously performed 11 minutes of magic on this Mohun Bagan turf. Another Argentine will visit Mohan Bagan this time.

In Kolkata, there is a sizable and devoted fan base for the Argentina national football team. These fans, who have previously seen players like Maradona and Messi, will now be rooting for Martinez, whose anticipation and quickness helped Argentina end a long 36-year trophy drought by winning their third FIFA World Cup.

Martinez was a key contributor to Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which Lionel Messi captained. In the quarterfinal game against the Netherlands and the summit match against France, he stopped two penalty shots each time.

Martinez, a player for Premier League team Aston Villa, will meet Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, and Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India.
At a charity game, Martinez will be the featured guest. He’ll spend time with poor kids and take part in a Maradona tribute ceremony. Throughout his two-day stay in the city, the Argentine football player will also go to a few sponsor events.
