How Igor Stimac’s ‘Tongue Lashing’ at halftime Led to India Winning the Intercontinental Cup

The Indian men’s soccer team had held off a potent Lebanon squad from scoring in three straight halves of play, but they had also been unable to put the ball in the opposing goal. They seemed to be an entirely different team when they entered the field for the second half of the Intercontinental Cup final. The inhibitions vanished, and the falir came next.

Sunil Chhetri and Lallianzuala Chhangte scored two well-executed goals, which allowed India defeat Lebanon by a score of 2-0 and win the championship.<img decoding=”async” loading=”lazy” class=”alignnone wp-image-30423″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon-750×422.png” alt=”” width=”1412″ height=”794″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon-750×422.png 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon-1024×576.png 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon-768×432.png 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon-390×220.png 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-how-igor-stimacs-tongue-lashing-at-halftime-led-to-india-winning-the-intercontinental-cup-image-1687155990-11zon.png 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1412px) 100vw, 1412px” />

What head coach Igor Stimac stated during the halftime team address was left up in the air.

The players and the coach revealed everything after the victory.

Igor Stimac, the head coach of India, said after the game, “I am really thrilled. Every game is important, every victory is crucial, particularly clean sheets. But I can assure you that by halftime, I was not at least content. For the first ten minutes, we played brilliantly, but after that, we vanished.

“We shouldn’t let them dominate the game in that way for 20 minutes. I should probably not reveal what was said at halftime, but it was effective. The guys’ response in the second half was excellent. I like to see India like this, Stimac stated.

Sunil Chhetri, the captain of India, also discussed the players’ need for a wake-up call to begin playing the way they should.

“At halftime, the supervisor gave us some verbal abuse. We were far from where we had been in the last game. It served as the necessary wake-up call, according to Chhetri. There were many words spoken, some of which I won’t repeat here. The most important thing, though, is that we knew we had it in us, and in the end, we have no regrets. Naturally, saying this at 2-0 makes it easier, but we are pleased with the victory.

Head coach Stimac looked forward to the AFC Asian Cup, where India has been placed in Group B with Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria, while the Indian men’s football squad basked in the victory.

“We have a lot of work to do before the AFC Asian Cup. Better posture, run timing, and knowing when to play on the ground and when not are things we need to master, according to Stimac. Lebanese transitions were 7-8 excellent. Neither against Australia nor Uzbekistan can that occur. How we do now is unimportant compared to how we perform in January (at the Asian Cup).

India has so far competed in six games in 2023 and has won every one of them. Attacking winger Lallianzuala Chhangte thinks that India’s recent victories have been the result of a solid defensive line.

“Winning a trophy with the squad feels amazing. However, the primary factor in our victory is the caliber of our defense. We have more flexibility up front because of their defensive stability, according to Chhangte, who won the game’s player of the match award. We came up against a really talented team tonight, but we had a different mindset going into the second half, and it worked.”

Sandesh Jhingan, a center defender for India and the tournament’s top performer, thinks that a team’s confidence is built on its ability to keep its opponents off the scoreboard.

“The possibilities are endless if we play as we did in the second half. A clean sheet is the cornerstone upon which any team should develop. We could have done better, but there were still some mistakes, so let’s fix them and see where it gets us,” Jhingan added.

While the Blue Tigers still have some things to improve on, skipper Chhetri said it best: “Winning at home is sweet!”

“This triumph was great, but we were unable to win the Intercontinental Cup the previous time. Even though it was difficult, we were glad to maintain the tidy sheets, said Chhetri.
